Gorges du Verger

Creuse, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Verger gorges are at Bourganeuf, in the Creuse. The Verger torrent flows between steep cliffs in successive cascades, in a wooded setting. It is a protected, listed natural site, the first in the Limousin to be protected for both its artistic and natural character. The original protection covers mainly the cliffs of the right bank; a study aims to extend it to the whole gorge and the nearby romantic park.

The place also has an industrial history: mills, a brewery and a tannery were built by the water, which in 1886 powered one of the first hydroelectric plants in France.

A hiking loop of about 5.4 kilometres from Bourganeuf follows the Verger cascades and passes near the château of Émile de Girardin. 'Maisons de l'esprit' have been set up along the path in memory of Martin Nadaud.
