Aubusson
Nestling in the deep gorges of the Creuse, Aubusson owes its worldwide fame to its centuries-old art of tapestry, whose traditional weaving technique has been inscribed by UNESCO on the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Since the 15th century the town's workshops have woven wall tapestries that adorned castles and palaces throughout Europe, a skill now presented and continued at the International Tapestry Centre.
The weavers' houses with steep roofs along the river and the remains of the feudal castle on its rocky promontory make up a townscape faithful to its craft past. Every corner of the old town, from cobbled lanes to stone bridges, recalls this textile tradition that still keeps the town alive.
