Guéret
The capital of the county of La Marche in medieval times, Guéret became in 1790 the main town of the Creuse département, a prefectural role it still holds, in a fine 18th-century mansion.
The town, one of the least populated prefectures in France, has kept a peaceful provincial atmosphere, with some granite mansions and the former bishop's palace turned into a museum of art and archaeology, known notably for its collection of Limoges enamels. A starting point for the rolling landscapes of the Millevaches plateau and the many châteaux and natural sites of the département, Guéret is above all a quiet gateway to the Creuse countryside.
