Arc de Triomphe d'Orange

Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The ancient arch of Orange, or commonly the Triumphal Arch of Orange, is a monumental Roman arch of the early first century, which marks the north entrance of Arausio (now Orange, Vaucluse) on the Via Agrippa (now route nationale 7). The arch of Orange was included on the first list of historic monuments (1840) and has been on the World Heritage list in Europe since 1981. The arch was probably erected between the years 20 and 25, to commemorate the victories of Germanicus, who died in 19, and possibly "restored" to Tiberius in 26/27, depending on the interpretation given to the dedication added at that date on the two faces of the monument. In the Middle Ages, the monument was fortified to serve as an advanced bastion at the town entrance.
