Arbois
Arbois is a commune of the Jura, at the edge of the Jura massif, between 246 and 613 m altitude, crossed by the Cuisance. Considered the capital of Jura wines, it obtained in 1936 the first appellation d'origine contrôlée in France. The vineyard produces notably vin jaune and vin de paille.
Louis Pasteur settled in Arbois at the age of eight and carried out research in the family home, notably experiments on wine fermentation that led to pasteurisation. The town has about ten protected monuments, three museums and the famous Capucins bridge, and its old centre keeps fortifications dating from 1260.
Arbois has a little over 3,100 inhabitants, which makes it the ninth commune of the Jura. A station links the town by regional train to Besançon and Lons-le-Saunier.
