Lons-le-Saunier

Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

As its name suggests, Lons-le-Saunier owes its origin to salt-water springs worked from Gallo-Roman times, whose industrial exploitation continued into the twentieth century and is still recalled by the Parc des Bains. The rue du Commerce, lined with arcades known locally as "couverts", crosses the historic centre and leads to the town's main monuments, including the birthplace of Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle, the officer who composed in one night the song that became the French national anthem. Place de la Liberté, recently redesigned around its fountains, and the Italian-style theatre overlooking it embody the renewed energy of this Jura town, a gateway to the Revermont vineyards and the first slopes of the Jura mountains.
