Baume-les-Messieurs

Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

One of the French people's favourite villages lies in the typical reculées of the Jura foothills and in the heart of an exceptional site classified Natura 2000 and 3 stars. A cave 120 metres deep, whose spectacular entrance is crossed by the river Dard, will amaze you. This site and its caves are open to the public. Nearby, the tufa waterfall is among the most beautiful in France.

The village has in its centre an imperial abbey. In the Romanesque abbey church, founded in 909–910, you discover a Flemish altarpiece and a carved portal, both from the sixteenth century.

More recently a major discovery was made in the very choir of the abbey church of Saint-Pierre, during archaeological excavations: stained glass whose origin would go back to the sixth century. All these elements, owned by the commune, will soon be staged to present to the public the genesis of this place of worship rich in symbols.
