Abbaye d'Ambronay

Ain, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Abbey of Notre-Dame d'Ambronay, in the Ain, is one of the oldest Benedictine foundations in the region, dating back to the 8th century. From its rich past survive an abbey church and above all a 15th-century Flamboyant Gothic cloister, with stone tracery among the finest in the region.

Restored and converted into a cultural meeting centre, the abbey is now best known for its Baroque music festival, held every September and October, which draws ensembles and audiences from all over the world to this preserved monastic setting.
