Grottes du Cerdon

Ain, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Cerdon caves, between Lake Nantua and the Ain river, offer a route rich in lessons and discoveries. The visitor can follow the whole course of an underground river that has now disappeared, from its burial to its resurgence halfway up the cliff, facing the Cerdon valley. The site holds strange concreted landscapes of varied shapes and volumes and a majestic porch, not to mention a viewpoint with a superb view of the village of Cerdon and its steep vineyard. A small tourist train will take you to the entrance of the underground domain. You then continue on foot, in the bed of the now-vanished river, along this strange, surprising and grandiose route, the result of the slow work of the tumultuous waters of the great ice ages. After an exit onto the viewpoint overlooking the whole Cerdon valley and passing under a majestic porch, you will enjoy the relaxation area/play area and try out the educational trails on the earth's chronology and human evolution. You can also picnic on the site at shaded tables or in forest shelters and taste our speciality Cerdon wine, ancestral method, in a Lapp tent.
