Zoo et parc de l'Orangerie

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est

The Parc de l'Orangerie is a large public park in Strasbourg, facing the Council of Europe and the European Parliament. Its layout began in the eighteenth century and it was turned into an English garden between 1832 and 1848. It owes its name to the Joséphine pavilion, built in the early nineteenth century to house orange trees seized from the château de Bouxwiller during the Revolution. The pavilion, listed as a historic monument in 1929, was destroyed by fire in 1968 and then rebuilt identically; the whole park has been listed since 1993.

For the 1895 industrial and craft exhibition, the park received a lake, a waterfall, a grotto and a small zoo, as well as a Renaissance-style half-timbered house from Molsheim, now occupied by a restaurant.

You stroll there among old trees, a rose garden and lawns. The park is best known for its storks, reintroduced in Alsace thanks to a breeding centre set up on site.
