Villa Cavrois

Nord, Hauts-de-France

An architectural manifesto, the Villa Cavrois at Croix, in the Nord, is the emblematic work of the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, a leading figure of the modernist movement. It was designed and built for Paul Cavrois, a northern textile industrialist, and his family.

The programme for this modern château, commissioned in 1929, was clear: 'air, light, work, sport, hygiene, comfort and economy'. Listed as a historic monument in 1990 thanks to public mobilisation and acquired by the State in 2001, it underwent a huge restoration begun in 2003 by the regional cultural affairs office and taken over in 2008 by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, completed in June 2015.
