Senlis
Senlis is a commune of the Oise, about forty kilometres north of Paris, on the Nonette, between three great forests. Founded in Antiquity, it was the residence of several sovereigns in the Middle Ages, and it was at Senlis that Hugh Capet was elected king of France in 987. It has about 15,000 inhabitants.
The old centre is surrounded by Gallo-Roman and medieval ramparts, which enclose old streets. Notre-Dame cathedral, Gothic in style, is its main monument. A protected sector of 42 hectares was created in 1962 to protect this heritage. The town lies in the Oise-Pays de France Regional Nature Park and is surrounded by about 120 km² of forests, crossed by several long-distance footpaths, including the GR 11, 12 and 655.
