Puy Mary
The Puy Mary (1,787 m), in the heart of the classified Cantal Mountains massif, in the Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Nature Park, is the most visited natural site in the département (about 400,000 visitors a year). The Cantal Mountains massif is, moreover, the largest volcanic massif in Europe (2,700 km² in area). The site is characterised by its purity, its grandeur, but also by its authenticity, integrity, rarity and fragility. Indeed, at the top of the Puy Mary, a breathtaking panorama lets you discover 12 glacial valleys (about 10,000 ha), which spread out like a star along the ridges radiating from its summit. The quality and integrity of this unique natural ensemble motivated the decision of a National Grand Site Operation. It is intended to renaturalise it, anticipate its protection and enhance it.
