Le Pas de Cére

Cantal, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Pas de Cère is a natural site of the Cère valley, in the commune of Thiézac, in the Cantal, in the heart of the largest volcano in Europe. The river has carved a narrow passage there through a glacial bar, which also gives it the name Trou de Gourniou. The gorges bear witness to the power of the glacier that cut deep into the volcanic rock.

Upstream, the Enfer de Casteltinet is an immense landslide: over more than a kilometre, blocks of strange shapes pile up between a cliff and the river. Further on, the Roucolle waterfall is also set in a glacial bar. It is first seen from a high viewpoint, accessible directly from the Roucolle car park, between Thiézac and Vic-sur-Cère, along the N122 national road. A discovery trail lets you cover the site on foot, among rocky chaos, deep gorges and fast water.
