la Roche de Landeyrat
The Roche de Landeyrat, in the Cantal, is a basalt boulder field in the middle of the vast Cézallier plateau, equipped with a discovery trail. A sound post comes to life against the chaotic landscape of basalt blocks, and further on illustrated cubes turn in the hands of children. The stones thus tell their story: their formation, the attempts at human settlement and then the return of animals and plants.
The Roche de Landeyrat has been a registered site for its picturesque geology since 1972 and a Sensitive Natural Area since 2008. It has been crossed by a walking trail since 2006, and the new facilities help everyone understand the origin of these 'heaps of stones' on the plateau. Although it is one of the smallest sites in the département's network, it is a very original place for a family outing, with volcanic and geological themes as well as history, wildlife and plants.
