Le Rocher de Ronesque

Cantal, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Rocher de Ronesque is a basalt table in the Cantal, above the hamlet of Ronesque in the Carladès. It is the result of relief inversion, like the Rocher de Carlat: a lava flow settled at the bottom of a valley, then erosion carried away the softer ground around it, leaving the more resistant lava to dominate the landscape after some five million years.

The path to the rock starts from the hamlet. From the top the view takes in a vast plateau, with the Cantal mountains to the north and the Aubrac to the south-east; a viewpoint indicator helps identify the summits. The site is freely accessible and is a stage on a hiking circuit linking the Rocher des Pendus to the Roc de Ronesque.
