Musée Mémorial d'Omaha
The Omaha Beach memorial museum is on Avenue de la Libération, at Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer (Calvados), above Omaha beach. It occupies about 1,400 m² and is devoted to the Second World War in this sector of the Normandy landings.
The collections gather uniforms, vehicles, weapons, personal objects and equipment, American as well as German. They come mostly from Second World War soldiers, and many of them were used in daily life. Among the large pieces are notably a landing craft, a 155 mm gun, a tank and a Belgian anti-tank hedgehog. A panoramic reconstruction of the beach completes the whole.
Thematic panels retrace the phases of the German occupation up to the landings, and evoke life under the occupation. A film with testimonies from American veterans is also shown. The museum usefully complements the visit of the nearby American cemetery and the beach remains.
