Musée mémorial de la Bataille de Normandie

Calvados, Normandie

The Battle of Normandy memorial museum is at Bayeux (Calvados), boulevard Fabian-Ware, the first important town liberated after the Landings. Opened on 14 July 1981, it has been enlarged several times and now covers about 2,300 m²; its present museography dates from 2006. It is built along a stretch of ring road laid out in June 1944 by British Royal Engineers to let heavy vehicles avoid the streets of the old town.

The route traces the seventy-seven days of the Battle of Normandy, from 7 June to 29 August 1944. The museum has an important collection of uniforms and military vehicles, and shows an archive film of about twenty-five minutes. Outside, several machines are on display, including a Sherman M4 A1 tank, an M10 Wolverine, a Churchill Crocodile and a Jagdpanzer 38(t), as well as artillery pieces.

The British military cemetery of Bayeux is right next to the museum.
