Musée du Débarquement
The Landing Museum is on place du 6 Juin, at Arromanches-les-Bains (Calvados), facing the remains of the artificial harbour built by the Allies after 6 June 1944. Inaugurated on 5 June 1954, it is considered the first museum built to present the events that began that day in Normandy.
It explains how the harbour, nicknamed Mulberry, was designed, assembled and used: models detailing its various elements, dioramas, objects, uniforms and films. At its peak, the harbour unloaded more than 18,000 tonnes of equipment a day. After two and a half years of work, the museum reopened with a new 1,200 m² exhibition space, digital features (augmented reality, video mapping) and, upstairs, a large map table where a projection traces the period from the Landings to the completion of the harbour.
The visit suits families as well as military history enthusiasts and combines easily with that of the Arromanches 360 circular cinema, nearby.
