Musée Electropolis

Haut-Rhin, Grand Est

The EDF Electropolis Museum "The adventure of electricity" is a museum devoted to electric energy in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin, France). The museum traces the history of electricity, from Antiquity to the present day, through experiments, discovery workshops, and explanations of theories and inventions. Visitors are invited to take part in experiments on electricity as they were practised in the eighteenth century and to observe the related physical phenomena. Exhibition spaces with shows, collections of objects, household appliances and special effects (static electricity generator, Faraday cage) are offered. The Sulzer-BBC steam-engine alternator on show is the last witness of the era of the first world's fairs. This 170-tonne machine, whose wheel measures 6 metres in diameter, is staged during shows, with the help of lighting effects and a multimedia projection.
