Musée de Préhistoire des Gorges du Verdon
Designed by the English architect Norman Foster, the departmental Museum of Prehistory of the Verdon Gorges, labelled Musée de France, is the largest prehistory museum in Europe. It presents to the public the results of the excavation of about sixty archaeological sites in Haute-Provence and the Verdon. A true avant-garde museum, the collections, dioramas, interactive terminals, virtual show and information panels let you reconstruct the life of prehistoric people. The museum visit is completed by the discovery of a reconstructed prehistoric village and by the visit of the Baume-Bonne cave (for groups and by appointment). This major archaeological site of European prehistory, listed as a Historic Monument, has preserved evidence of 400,000 years of prehistoric life. Access to the cave is by a path in the garrigue after an hour's walk.
