Musée de la Grande Chartreuse

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Created in 1957, the museum aims to enlighten visitors about the Carthusian order, its 900 years of history, its way of life and the Grande Chartreuse and its architecture. The museum is in the heart of the Désert des Chartreux and the Chartreuse regional nature park at La Correrie, in a group of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century monastic buildings called the "lower houses" of the Grande Chartreuse monastery. These old buildings were once intended for the housing and workshops of the lay brothers; over the years they successively housed a printing works and an infirmary for sick Fathers. This La Correrie site, set below the monastery, was chosen to house the museum because it holds back the flow of visitors downstream of the monastery, about twenty minutes' walk from it. The Musée de France label was awarded by the Ministry of Culture in recognition of the museum's interest and its museographic quality. The museum's operations manager is Nicolas Diederichs.
