Gorges du Guiers Mort

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The gorges of the Guiers Mort form a wooded canyon below Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, in the heart of the Chartreuse massif. The site of Fourvoirie marks its entrance: the road was once closed here by a gate. The buildings of the old Chartreuse distillery, abandoned in 1935 after a landslide and now a listed historic monument, still stand here, together with the old Fourvoirie forges.

Between Saint-Laurent-du-Pont and Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, nineteen bridges cross the torrent. Some are listed, such as the 16th-century Pont Peirant. The Pont de la Tannerie bears the date 1659 on its keystone, and the Pont du Martinet stands beside the ruins of an old trip-hammer forge. This setting of mossy rocks and rushing water has inspired many painters.
