Glaciere de Corrençon
The Glacière cave is a cold-trap-type cavity, about a kilometre west of Corrençon-en-Vercors, in the Isère. Cold air accumulates in the entrance shaft and stays there, so that the temperature remains close to zero and ice survives at the bottom even in summer.
The cave was worked in the early twentieth century as an ice factory for the people of Grenoble. A staircase lets you go down to the bottom of the cavity, where you see the ice.
You get there by a short walk, with no access road. Several walking circuits from Corrençon cite it as a stage, including one linking the glacière to the Barre aux Chèvres. An old source however reports that the entrance was closed by a grille, as a safety measure: it is best to check on the spot before going.
