Mortemart

Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Visiting Mortemart is leafing through a history book. The old castle built in 955 tells of the tenth century. If the fortifications have disappeared, the keep tower, the justice hall and the guardroom recall the perils that threatened medieval towns, as do the site of the drawbridge and the pond, the remnant of the old moats.

The Carmelite and Augustinian convents built in 1330 bear witness for their part to the end of the Middle Ages. Both built on a square plan, they were completed up to the eighteenth century. The Augustinian chapel, which became the parish church, houses carved wooden stalls of the fifteenth century: their misericords, which let the monks rest, recall the long services of old. The old covered market and the fine notables' houses evoke the flourishing trade of the seventeenth century.
