Le Chaos et le Rocher des Fées

Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Rochers des Fées rock shelter, in the Haute-Vienne, lies among erratic boulders of impressive size. Excavations by the prehistoric antiquities service showed that the shelter was occupied for a long time in prehistory. The remains and dwelling structures found attest to occupation from the Magdalenian to the Bronze Age, from about 15,000 to 800 years BC.

At the foot of the shelter, the Brudou stream cascades through a spectacular granite boulder field. Among the rocks is a curious one shaped like a carp's head. In the middle of this jumble of boulders, on a large, smooth, sloping stone, various marks can be seen that have given rise to many legends.
