Montbéliard

Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Attached for more than three centuries to the German House of Württemberg, Montbéliard developed a singular Protestant identity in the land of Franche-Comté, still attested by the Saint-Martin temple, one of the first great Protestant buildings built in France. The castle of the dukes of Württemberg, with its round towers overlooking the old town, now houses a history museum retracing this rich princely past, while the half-timbered houses of the historic centre recall the Germanic architecture of the region. The historic cradle of the French car industry, the town also owes its modern prosperity to the nearby Peugeot factory at Sochaux, whose Aventure museum presents the industrial epic that shaped the whole urban area.
