Château Montalembert

Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

The Château Montalembert, at Maîche in the Doubs, set in a French formal garden, is one of the high places of local history. This residence was built in 1524, when the Old Castle was abandoned, and renovated in the 18th century.

Charles de Montalembert, a fearless orator and brilliant writer and one of the foremost champions of Catholic liberalism, stayed here regularly until his death in 1870. It was also here, in November 1944, that a stormy meeting took place between Churchill, de Gaulle and de Lattre de Tassigny. The château can be visited; information is available from the Maîche tourist office.
