Fort de Joux
Leaving Pontarlier on the road to Switzerland, the Cluse de Mijoux has at its summit the Château de Joux, dating from the 10th century and constantly altered over the centuries. The largest works were carried out by Vauban in the reign of Louis XIV.
The imposing fortress held famous prisoners: Berthe de Joux, Mirabeau and Toussaint Louverture. The Château de Joux, in the Doubs, overlooks the Pontarlier gorge, which opens a way to Switzerland through the Jura mountains. It is in the commune of La Cluse-et-Mijoux.
