Mâcon

Saône-et-Loire, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Built on the banks of the Saône, whose lively quays offer a pleasant walk lined with colourful façades, Mâcon long prospered from the river trade in wine from the surrounding Mâconnais slopes. The two Romanesque towers, all that remains of the former cathedral of Saint-Vincent destroyed during the Revolution, still dominate the town and recall its rich medieval religious past. Birthplace of the poet Alphonse de Lamartine, who sang its praises in several works, Mâcon remains today the southern gateway to wine-growing Burgundy, between the renowned Mâconnais crus and the first slopes of the Beaujolais just to the south.
