Chalon-sur-Saône

Saône-et-Loire, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Birthplace of Nicéphore Niépce, the inventor of photography in the early nineteenth century, Chalon-sur-Saône celebrates this heritage through a museum bearing his name and an international photography festival that enlivens the town every summer. The landscaped quays along the Saône, planted with trees and lined with terraces, look out over the Île Saint-Laurent, a former boatmen's district now turned into a peaceful promenade in the middle of the river. The cathedral of Saint-Vincent, with its nineteenth-century neo-Gothic façade grafted onto an older building, and the covered market complete the heritage of this trading town, a historic crossroads between Burgundy and the Rhône corridor.
