Les portes d'Enfer

Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Roc d'Enfer, in the commune of Lathus-Saint-Rémy, in the Vienne, is one of the wildest places in the Gartempe valley. The river flows fast there, in a bed squeezed between two hills strewn with rocks of curious shapes, down to the Roc d'Enfer, whose base is partly hollow. The waters that rush in produce dull noises and rumbles that have fed many legends, told to explain the origin of the rock heaps.

The site has been protected by a biotope order since 1991, because of its richness in fauna and flora. It is reached on foot, by sometimes rugged paths: allow about an hour round trip to the Roc, and half an hour more to reach a dam left unfinished. The Gartempe also attracts kayakers, and high-level competitions are held there every year. In summer, a local guide offers discovery walks of the site.
