Château de Fougeret

Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Mentioned as early as 1337, the Château de Fougeret stands at the top of a cliff almost forty metres high overlooking the Vienne valley, in the south of the département. Built in the 15th century by the Frotier family, it was the seat of a high court of justice under the Ancien Régime, then transformed under the Second Empire, which gave it its present appearance: a main building flanked by three round towers, a chapel and two separate towers.

Listed as a historic monument in 2010 and being restored by its owners, it retains wall paintings, a large Gothic fireplace, a carved staircase and medieval features such as its machicolations and ice house. It is best known for its guided tours devoted to the strange phenomena attributed to it, which have made it one of the most famous 'haunted' châteaux in France. A ten-hectare park with an arboretum runs along the river.
