Les gorges du Chassezac
The Chassezac gorges cut into the plateau between the Cévennes to the south and the Margeride to the north, on the boundary of Lozère and the Ardèche. The Chassezac, a tributary of the Ardèche, rises in Lozère, on the slopes of the Gardille massif. At the La Garde-Guérin viewpoint, the canyon has a drop of about 400 metres.
La Garde-Guérin, a fortified village listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, overlooks the canyon from eastern Lozère. A developed viewpoint near the village offers a panorama over the gorges, and a path lets you go down to the torrent. Further downstream, the Chassezac flows between vertical limestone cliffs, shingle beaches and pools of clear water. The site attracts canyoning enthusiasts, who must be well equipped and supervised, as well as climbers, swimmers and hikers, with some thirty kilometres of marked paths.
