Les Gorges de Langouette
The Langouette gorges cut into the Jura massif between Les Planches-en-Montagne and the place called Montliboz, over about a kilometre. The Saine, the river that carved them in limestone, flows there at the bottom of a very tight canyon: at its narrowest point, it is only 4 metres wide, while its depth varies from 15 to 47 metres.
At the entrance of the gorges, the river falls in a cascade of about ten metres. This fall long provided energy: a sawmill operated there from 1871 before burning in 1959, and a small hydroelectric plant, installed in the early twentieth century, supplied the region. Today, a developed and secured forest path lets you explore the site among cliffs and vegetation. The upper Saine valley has been listed as a natural site since September 2011.
