Saut de la Saisse
The Saut de la Saisse is a waterfall of the Jura massif, where the Ain flows into the Vouglans reservoir lake, at Pont-de-Poitte and Patornay, between Lons-le-Saunier and Clairvaux-les-Lacs. Before the dam was built, gorges existed at this spot and the waterfall was higher; the waters were then diverted upstream to supply a hydroelectric plant now disused.
Today, the Ain drops about fifteen metres through a series of cascades, crossing a rocky site called the giants' kettles. The limestone there was carved by water and pebbles; these kettles are mostly visible at low water.
