Les cascades de Mortain
The Mortain waterfalls are in the commune of Mortain-Bocage, in the south of the Manche, in the heart of a wooded, hilly area where altitudes vary from 70 to 327 metres. The Cance, a tributary of the Sélune, forms two falls there, called the Grande Cascade and the Petite Cascade.
The site is explored on foot by paths that run alongside the water through the vegetation. Mortain-Bocage was born in 2016 from the merger of five communes including Mortain, and has about 3,000 inhabitants. The small town keeps two other places to visit: the Abbaye Blanche, founded in 1120 and adorned with contemporary stained glass, and the collegiate church of Saint-Évroult, which houses a medieval chrismal, a sort of portable reliquary used by itinerant missionaries. The waterfalls thus offer an easy walk in a landscape typical of the Norman bocage.
