Le Roc aux Sorciers
The Roc-aux-Sorciers is a rock shelter containing a site decorated with monumental Upper Palaeolithic wall sculptures. It is in the commune of Angles-sur-l'Anglin, in the Vienne. The carvings are more precisely attributed to the Middle Magdalenian, about 14,000 years ago.
The site is called the 'Sorcerers' Rock' after a local legend according to which witches and sorcerers gathered here. The name of the place was mentioned in writing by Jacques Rougé in 1904, long before the archaeological site was discovered.
