Le Grand Filon

Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

It is the story of an iron mine discovered several hundred years ago and of a territory with an incredibly rich subsoil. It is also the legendary story mixing blacksmiths, unbreakable swords and brave knights. For Jérôme Durand, director of Le Grand Filon, it is "a cultural site, a research site but also the ideal place to relax as a family and discover our past while having fun".

The Saint-Georges-des-Hurtières mines were worked from the Middle Ages and quickly became the most important in Savoie. Although the site closed in 1931, it has lost none of its magic. About 1,500,000 tonnes of ore would still remain underground, about as much as was extracted. Jérôme Durand wishes to let everyone discover this wealth "notably the youngest".
