Le domaine de George Sand à Nohant
George Sand (1804–1876) made the family estate of Nohant, near La Châtre, a high place of artistic creation. She wrote there her famous pastoral novels (La Petite Fadette, Les Maîtres sonneurs) set in the "Vallée Noire" and welcomed there the greatest artists of her time such as Chopin, Liszt, Delacroix and Balzac. With the help of her son Maurice, she enlivened this "modest home" (small private theatre, puppet theatre). Impeccably restored, the Nohant estate gives off an authentic Romantic atmosphere. It is the starting point of the "George Sand route" that will lead you, as far as the "villa Algira" at Gargilesse, to the places that inspired her work: the keep of La Châtre, the châteaux of Ars and Saint-Chartier, the Moulin d'Angibault, the fortress of Sarzay, Sainte-Sévère and the "mare au diable".
