Gargilesse-Dampierre

Indre, Centre-Val de Loire

Gargilesse nestles in the green and peaceful Creuse valley. The village forms a harmonious ensemble, with its simple, flowered old houses, its castle rebuilt in the eighteenth century and its Romanesque church. You must enter this delightful church to see the frescoes of the crypt and above all the decorated capitals. Very sensitive to the picturesque nature of this village and the beauty of its natural surroundings, George Sand settled there and made it the setting of many novels. Her house, turned into a museum, is in the lower part of the town. Gargilesse also welcomed many painters, among them Monet, Théodore Rousseau, Osterlind... Today, many artists live in the village.
