Le Courant d'Huchet
The Courant d'Huchet is a small coastal river of the Landes, about 9 km long, which drains the Étang de Léon before flowing into the Atlantic at Moliets-et-Maâ. It crosses the communes of Léon, Vielle-Saint-Girons and Moliets-et-Maâ. Its mouth is the only one in the Bay of Biscay not to have been stabilised. A nature reserve was created there in 1981 over about 618 hectares, and the site is also part of a Natura 2000 special protection area.
The watercourse winds through a forest of maritime pines and oaks, where exotic species such as bald cypress, royal fern and pink hibiscus also grow. You can see eels and lampreys, birds such as the little bittern, as well as roe deer, otters and European mink. Private navigation is forbidden there: only professional boatmen may take the current by boat, which preserves the environment.
