Hossegor

Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Soorts-Hossegor is a seaside resort of the Silver Coast, in the Landes, nestled between the forest and the Atlantic Ocean. The old village of Soorts is attested from the eleventh and twelfth centuries, but Hossegor developed as a holiday resort only in the early twentieth century, attracting notably figures from the Parisian literary and intellectual world. Its marine lake, filled and emptied by the tides, is linked to the ocean by a canal dug between 1868 and 1876.

In the 1920s, property developments adopted the neo-Basque style, of which the Sporting Casino, a listed historic monument, remains the most emblematic example. The commune is best known for surfing and its spots, including La Gravière; an event on the world qualifying circuit, the Quiksilver Pro France, is held there each early October. The pine forest, which covers more than a quarter of the territory, surrounds the lake and offers a setting for walks away from the beach.
