Le Batelier du Ried

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est

The Batelier du Ried is based at Muttersholtz, in the Bas-Rhin, in the heart of the Ried, an alluvial plain crossed by the Ill and its branches, south of Sélestat. Its boatman, one of the last in the region, offers trips in a flat-bottomed boat.

The outing lasts two to three hours and follows the Ill between Muttersholtz and Ebersmunster. The boatman talks about local history and the wildlife and plants of the wetlands, points out the Abbey of Ebersmunster, visible along the way, and is happy to talk about the beavers living in the river. The return is on foot across the meadows, at each person's pace.

Boat trips run roughly from Easter to All Saints' Day, weather permitting and by booking only. Out of season, the same guide offers walking or cycling tours on the nature and history of the Ried.
