Lac de Vouglans

Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Lac de Vouglans was born in 1968 from the commissioning of the arch dam of the same name, built on the river Ain in the heart of the Jura massif. With its waters stretching nearly thirty-five kilometres between wooded gorges, it is the third largest artificial lake in France by capacity.

The dam, one of the tallest structures of this type in France, profoundly transformed the Ain valley by drowning old gorges to create this vast body of water with indented shores. The resulting landscape, between limestone cliffs and forests, proved particularly favourable to the development of water tourism.

Sailing, water skiing, diving and swimming now animate the lake's shores during the summer season, while several laid-out beaches and marinas dot its perimeter. The proximity of Moirans-en-Montagne, French capital of the toy, completes the area's tourist appeal.
