Lac de Biscarrosse et de Parentis
Triangular in shape, the Lac de Biscarrosse et de Parentis covers about 3,500 hectares between Biscarrosse, Parentis-en-Born, Gastes and Sainte-Eulalie-en-Born. It lies at the centre of the chain of great Landes lakes, between the Lac de Cazaux et de Sanguinet to the north and the Lac d'Aureilhan to the south. Its waters, entirely fresh, have an average depth of nearly 7 metres.
The lake was born about 5,000 years ago: the rivers flowing down from the Landes plateau towards the ocean had their mouths blocked by the formation of coastal dunes, creating a string of lakes. Its waters reach the ocean through the Sainte-Eulalie stream, the Lac d'Aureilhan and the Mimizan stream. The wooded shores offer beaches, marinas and footpaths, and the Hydraviation museum in Biscarrosse recalls the seaplanes that once landed here.
