Musée du Lac

Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

South of the Arcachon basin, the largest lake in the Landes (58 km²) shelters behind an impressive sand barrier that cuts it off from the ocean. Its depths hold the key to the historical evolution of the whole Aquitaine coast, and on the fossil banks of the former bed of the Gourgue lie many prehistoric and Gallo-Roman sites: Losa, the Estey du Large and Put Blanc.

The museum, created in 1982, displays the most remarkable finds from the underwater excavations: jewellery, coins, firedogs with rams' heads, decorated pottery, huge jars used to store tar and curious pots with internal handles.
