La vallée des Merveilles et de Fontanalba
In the heart of the Mercantour National Park and at the foot of the "sacred mountain" of Bégo (2,872 m), the Vallée des Merveilles and that of Fontanalba shelter the largest ensemble of protohistoric rock engravings in the world (several tens of thousands recorded) in a landscape shaped by glaciers over the millennia.
About fifty kilometres from Menton, Mont Bego is a veritable open-air museum of prehistory. 36,000 rock engravings dated to the Copper Age and early Bronze Age are preserved on the rock slabs.
The park's climatic and geological originality is reflected in a great variety of natural landscapes (polished rocks, lakes...), fauna and flora.
