La butte de Montsec
Set on an outlier hill of the Côtes de Meuse that can be seen from afar, this monument is formed of a circular colonnade at the centre of which a copper orientation table reproduces in relief the position of the villages and locates the fighting of the Saint-Mihiel Salient.
It is reached by a very wide staircase. The Butte de Montsec is an isolated hill (375 metres) that offers a magnificent, very wide panorama over Lac de Madine and the Côtes de Meuse.
The work of the sculptor Egerton Swarthout, the monument, built in 1930 in Euville stone, commemorates the offensives led by the American army on 12–14 September 1918 and 9–11 November 1918, to reduce the St-Mihiel salient. It was erected by the United States in 1932, in Euville stone. It bears the names of the American units that fought in 1918 in the sector.
