Pelouses de Génicourt
The limestone grasslands of Génicourt, in the Meuse, owe their character to a steep slope, rainfall of around 800 mm a year, a south-west aspect, thin, poor and stony soil and, of course, limestone.
The habitat is fairly dry, as rain runs off quickly and the remaining water is easily absorbed by the permeable limestone. Sunshine is abundant and the ground warms quickly, the site being well sheltered from the wind. Added to this, human activity on the slopes has allowed the grasslands and scree to become established and to persist.
